Our Forest

Trees In Our Forest Need To Be
Thinned 20 To 30 Feet Apart To
Avoid Forest Fire Tree Crowning

 As I See It
By The Publisher
Filming rodeos and calling Auctions across the country this traveling microphone has had the privilege of living in the Southern Oregon Cascade Forest for over 20 years, I couldn't help but notice how much our forest needs cleaning up with all of the kindling laying around, a huge fire potential waiting to happen.

Living on the Jerry Whitlatch ranch over the years between Rocky Point and Fort Klamath much of this time Jerry harvested both timber and cattle.  Select  cutting and leaving trees 20 to 30 feet apart for future harvest. I enjoyed watching deer, elk and other animals walk down to Crystal Creek during the evenings to drink.

Recently a long time forest expert took me for a ride in to some timber where trees and under growth were so thick if a fire broke out there is no way to stop it, potentially destroying thousands of acres of valuable timber as it has in past years. I soon realized and quickly learned that over 75 % of our timber resources need thinning. We must act quickly to save precious timber that we and our grandchildren will need in years to come.

FIRE BROKE OUT SUMMER OF 2006 - In the Southern Oregon Cascades  Recently (under a 3 year contract agreement) I was privileged to do fire & security watch for a third generation logging company and a fire broke out late one afternoon near our logging operation. If I hadn't been there to report the fire potentially timber in a 30 to 50 mile square radius could have burned to the ground before the fire stopped. In the over 20 years that I have lived in the Oregon Cascades this was the only time I had ever been this close to a fire. Within 10 to 15 minutes the fire trucks had arrived and help was there on the scene putting out the Blaze.

The fire was out by sundown and had burned up to 1/4 acre of weeds and dry brush kindling around a rock pile and lost one tree. Needless to say that night I was up every 1/2 hour checking out my rear window of my travel trailer for a flair up. As things calmed down I slept better the 2nd & 3rd nights checking where the fire was every 2 to 3 hours.

THE "DOORS" Jim Morrison
Discovered Living In the Pacific Northwest
In 2005 the "DOORS" Jim Morrison nearly lost his ranch home due to a devastating fire because trees were growing to close together and there was no way too stop the fire tree crowning. More about this in the Jim Morrison Discovery DVD indicated at the RM JM DOORS navigation bar link above right.

THE BILL WATENBURG SHOW
KGO RADIO AM OUT OF
San Francisco -
I was pleased when I heard Bill Wattenburg on KGO Radio announce to millions of listeners in the summer of 2004 that 75 percent of our timber resources need to be thinned. If we don't act quickly we stand to lose millions of acres of our precious timber due to fire tree crowning with trees growing to close together. You can listen to Dr. Bill Wattenburg Show every Saturday & Sunday night between 10PM & 1AM at KGO Radio-AM 810 on your radio dial.
